GNCR ambassador case study – Dr Mark Dornan, GP Partner, Teams Medical Practice, Gateshead

Mark Dornan is a GP Partner at Teams Medical Practice in Gateshead. In his role, he provides day-to-day care, as well as teaching doctors in training and other health and care professionals. Mark helps coordinate care across Gateshead, bringing together partners from different health and care organisations.
He also serves as chief clinical information officer for the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board, working with multiple parts of the system to navigate issues and explore digital opportunities.
How Mark uses the GNCR
The nature of Mark’s role as a GP means he sees different patients, some of them who might have complex needs. This is where GNCR makes a real difference for him.
For example, when he’s caring for patients who have chronic illnesses or mental health issues, GNCR allows Mark to access case notes across multiple partners organisations in real time. This enables him to work in a transformative way, building on the care delivered by other teams and based on accurate facts.
“Instead of guessing what other investigations or prescriptions people did, GNCR enables us to actually be based on the facts, so we can give a higher quality of care.
“It means that we can do things in a timelier way. We can see and do everything there and then, improving patients’ experience and adding value on top of the teams that worked before us.”
Why Great North Care Record makes a difference?
The whole principle of GNCR is that it gives real-time access to other partners’ notes, and that, ultimately, improves the quality of patient care, enhances security, and reduces delays.
“Before shared records were in place, looking for information about a patient’s mental health record could take a week to turnaround before we could make a decision. Having GNCR is a significant time saving, especially in the clinical world where many of us are part-time, split across different roles.
“Often, when a patient was under the care of a service, it wasn’t always clear who the appropriate contact was, even if the case was assigned to a named individual. With GNCR, however, we have full visibility into exactly who was involved, what actions were taken, and what the care plan was. If we need to get their support to manage the next steps in a patient’s management, we can easily do that.”
