Great North Care Record reaches 1 million monthly views

The Great North Care Record (GNCR) has surpassed 1 million monthly views for the first time – supporting more frontline health and care staff and patients than ever before.
The GNCR securely shares and displays patient information from multiple health and care providers across the across the North East and North Cumbria, providing staff with a comprehensive view of a person’s health and care record. This allows the right staff, to have the right information, at the right time.
Recognised as one of the country’s most used shared care record platforms, GNCR has been live for staff for almost 5 years. In the month of January 2025, the platform recorded 1,031,658 views from over 30,000 regular users of the solution.
The start of 2025 has also seen the GNCR surpass 25 million total views since it launched in 2020.
Lisa Sewell, Programme Director for the GNCR, explains:
“Put simply, that is 1 million interventions each month where the data shared has made a difference and informed decision making around a person’s care.
“Working closely with partner organisations, third-party providers, academia, and other shared care record initiatives has allowed us to sustain and evolve GNCR into a more comprehensive, user-focused platform which ultimately delivers better care.
“What we have achieved so far is something as a region we’re very proud of, but we all recognise there is a greater opportunity to improve both the scale and quality of information presented. As a region, at all levels, we are committed to continuing to share the benefits of GNCR and raising awareness and engagement with all stakeholders in the region, to increase use for positive patient outcomes and engagement,” Lisa explains.
Prof Graham Evans, Executive Chief Digital and Infrastructure Officer and Senior Risk Owner (SIRO), NHS North East & North Cumbria ICB:
“It gives me great pride to see the service continuously go from strength to strength and support frontline care for the population we serve. Over the past 5 years, the GNCR has led the way when it comes to shared care records and connecting organisations together digitally. It really is the glue which brings us together in the North East and North Cumbria.”
“Together, we have demonstrated what can be achieved with a common purpose, working at scale, and providing care professionals with the right data at the right time. Regionally, we must continue to collaborate and promote using the Great North Care Record to maximise its value and provide greater benefit for all.”
Sangeetha is a GP and the Registered Manager at the Beacon View Medical Centre in Gateshead who regularly uses the GNCR.
“I started using the GNCR back in 2022, when I fully recognised it as a strong data resource. It plays a critical role in reducing potential harm to patients by ensuring that the right information is readily accessible,” she explains.
Sangeetha adds “as a GP, I strongly support the use of the GNCR as it provides clear valuable detail for my admin and clinical staff. It allows us to quickly see exactly which clinician a patient has seen, along with detailed information on medication decisions and previous visits.
“Having such a comprehensive shared care record helps in joining up care between primary and secondary care and continuity. That is so key.”
