Newcastle Hospitals and South Tyneside & Sunderland become latest to share maternity data into GNCR
The Great North Care Record (GNCR) and the North East and North Cumbria Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS), have delivered the ‘first of type’ integration with the electronic patient record (EPR) in maternity services, BadgerNet.
South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have become the latest organisations to share maternity data across the North East and North Cumbria.
They follow Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, who became the first Trust to start sharing maternity data directly in early July 2024. Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust became fast followers, sharing soon after in October 2024.

Rachel O’Neill
Rachel O’Neill, digital midwife, and Jason Lewins, application development officer, at South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust led on the integration with GNCR.
“BadgerNet allows real-time recording of all events wherever they occur, in the hospital, the community, or at home. To have this information available, at the click of a button, at the point of care, is transformational and will certainly improve the patient experience and safety by facilitating the sharing of information with our partner agencies”, Rachel explained.

Jason Lewins
Jason adds: “Connecting BadgerNet and the GNCR will allow direct real-time data sharing from the source. It will reduce the need for multiple access points and searching for additional data to help support decision making.
“This will allow easier data sharing, streamline processes, and increase the accuracy of information”.
The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust started their BadgerNet journey in 2022, supporting the overall NENC LMNS strategy.
Newcastle Hospitals’ maternity staff oversee around 6,000 births a year and often deal with some of the more complex cases in the region. Integrating patient information into one single platform is helping clinical staff record patient data more accurately, efficiently and securely.
Corinne Johnson, lead midwife for digital health at Newcastle Hospitals and GNCR ambassador, led on the BadgerNet implementation at the Trust. Corinne is passionate about digital and has been a digital midwife for over seven years.

Corinne Johnson
“Sharing maternity information directly from BadgerNet into the Great North record means that key information is going to be shared with healthcare providers and be readily available at the right time to inform decision making. This will save so much time and duplication as the key information will be available in one place. A massive leap on the right direction for improving quality and safety for mothers and babies”, said Corinne.
Remaining Trusts
In early 2025, the remaining Trusts, will onboard to share their maternity data into the GNCR via BadgerNet. These include:
- South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – April 2025
- North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust – May 2025
- County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust – July 2025
This collaborative partnership will significantly support health and care professionals and importantly delivers safer, better care for patients and the public.
