Third trust sharing data on the Great North Care Record

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust has become the third trust to begin sharing patient information as part of the Great North Care Record programme.

The trust serves a population of 430,000 local residents and employs around 8,000 staff.

Data sharing for safer care

From Wednesday 23 September, patient records are available on the Health Information Exchange. This is the underlying technology which allows health and care professionals to access care records from other parts of the region.

For patients in Sunderland, this now means that their GP records and local hospital records are available if they are receiving care elsewhere.

The information available includes:

  • Patient details and demographics
  • Allergies and adverse reactions
  • Encounters
  • Problems and diagnoses
  • Procedures
  • Vital signs
  • Admissions and discharges
  • Laboratory results
  • Microbiology
  • Care plans and miscellaneous reports

The information shared is ‘messaging based’ and only begins populating from the 23 September onwards.

Benefits to patient care

Dr Kevin Joisce, Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Chief Clinical Information Officer at the trust said: “This will make a huge difference to patient care. Given our proximity to other local hospitals, our patients are often admitted to Gateshead or Newcastle. Now the staff caring for them will know about their past medical history from Sunderland.

“Accessing the Great North Care Record has proved invaluable in emergency care because we can quickly find out about their past medication, investigations and treatment plans.”

Kathryn Walvin, Head of Information Systems said: “We are really pleased to get to this point. Our staff have been able to access GP records on the Great North Care Record for some time. However, this is the start of us being able to give information back into the system. Our patients move between services and hospitals so it’s only right that information recorded about them can follow them too.”

The trust joins Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Cumbria, Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, several community providers and GPs who are all sharing patient information with frontline staff.

All remaining trusts in the North East and North Cumbria are working to connect and share information as part of the Great North Care Record and plan to be connected by early 2021.
